{"id":24588,"date":"2025-03-03T19:04:13","date_gmt":"2025-03-03T19:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blackrockneurotech.com\/?p=24588"},"modified":"2025-05-09T20:54:07","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T20:54:07","slug":"synthetic-touch-via-blackrock-bci-featured-on-npr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blackrockneurotech.com\/insights\/synthetic-touch-via-blackrock-bci-featured-on-npr\/","title":{"rendered":"Synthetic Touch via Blackrock BCI Featured on NPR"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><br>Jon Hamilton | NPR<br><br>In 2014, engineering professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/feinstein.northwell.edu\/institutes-researchers\/our-researchers\/chad-bouton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chad Bouton<\/a>\u00a0got a lesson on the importance of touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bouton, an engineer at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research on Long Island, had developed a brain-computer interface that allowed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2016\/04\/13\/473821367\/technology-helps-a-paralyzed-man-transform-thought-into-movement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a man living with paralysis<\/a>&nbsp;to control one hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He was trying to pick something up and said, &#8216;You know, Chad, I can&#8217;t feel this object,'&#8221; Bouton says. &#8220;At that moment we realized, wow, that&#8217;s what we need to work on next.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than a decade later, Bouton&#8217;s team at Feinstein, a part of Northwell Health, is testing a system that can restore both movement and sensation in a paralyzed hand.
